as a way to introduce health and fitness to their dance students. Over the
last 8 years, they have provided dance and Zumba instruction to over 30

become Zumba-fied and dance inspired. Most recently, Jessica & Tony formed
part of the cast of Zumba's brand new fitness videos, just released in
January 2008. Fusing music, entertainment and fitness, Zumba is one of the
hottest and fastest growing dance and fitness phenomenons in the world.
They currently teach and perform at worldwide
dance and fitness conventions including, Idea Fitness, Chicago Salsa
Congress, New York Salsa Congress, SCW Fitness, Can Fit Pro, DCAC, AFAA
Japan Conventions, AFAA Taiwan Conventions, and more!
“Competing and performing always pushes you to dance at a higher level and
improve at a much faster pace. Though I love performing, my true passion lies
within the dance itself. Performing and teaching simply allows me to share my
passion with others. Dance is becoming one with the music and your partner
through connection and movement. It is your ability to let go with the right
sense of pressure, lead and follow, and exchange of psychic energy that merges
two dancers and the music into one congruous experience.”

Deanna Taphorn |
My name is Deanna Taphorn. I've been a Zumba instructor for 4 years and
counting! I first got my first taste of Zumba with Tony and Jess's first Zumba
class in the K.C. area 5 years ago. Ever since then I've been hooked and having
a blast. My personal preference for working out is Zumba as the music and melody
is always changing. There is no monotony to the class and that makes me want to
work out. The other great thing about Zumba is it doesn't matter what background
or shape you come from. Anyone can do it just as I do!!!
Some ask me how long I've been a dancer or have been dancing. I've always loved
to dance but I'd never taken a professional lesson in my life. That did change
once I met Tony and Jess and took there Salsa classes at the studio. Other than
that, Zumba has inspired me to move my body to the music with the benefit of
getting a workout.
Zumba helps me to unwind after a long day at work. I do Graphic Design during
the day which keeps me in my seat for hours at a time. This class helps me to
get any stress or anxiety from work out of my system. I always feel better after
doing a class and I've met some wonderful friends throughout the years. Zumba to
me is a second family. Everyone is having fun and is interested in the person
next to them. I love the fact that before class we talk about how are days went
and what is new in our lives. In all the other classes that I've ever taken at
different gyms it's the only class where people become friends outside of the
workout.
Come join us! Ditch the Routine and Join the Party!!
Thanks, Deanna

Kyle Patel |
Originally from
Pittsburgh, PA, I began dancing during my freshmen year of college (2001).
I love jazz, and I thought that it would be amusing to try a lindy hop
class. I ended up taking the ballroom and salsa classes as well. They were
a blast! I began teaching in 2004 when I took over the classes for the
University of Pittsburgh (Pitt)'s social dance club. At the same time I
began teaching at a ballroom studio. I've taught in a variety of settings,
from private lessons, to parties, to workshops. I've also had a number of
enjoyable performance opportunities, including doing several swing and
ballroom performances with the Swingsters, a Kansas City swing group. I
love many styles of dance, but my favorite is West Coast Swing. For the
past year and a half I've lived in KC and spent many of my weekends
traveling around the country competing in World Swing Dance Council events
and meeting West Coast Swing enthusiasts from all over the world.
My favorite competition is currently Dallas Dance, which has some of the
best late night dancing you'll ever find. My favorite performance was the
Kansas City Dances with the Stars Show, a local live show version of the
television show Dancing with the Stars. My celebrity and I won doing a
Foxtrot.
Dance is my passion. I'm constantly working on my own dancing and I love
helping others work on theirs.

Jon Micmichen |
My name is Jon McMichen. I teach
Hip/hop, poppin, and electric boogaloo. I have been dancing for a
total of 4 years. In the 4 years I have learned many styles. Poppin,
Electric Boogaloo, Lockin, Tut, etc. In this 9 week course I am teaching a
basic hip/hop routine which I add onto to it, as my class learns each
8 count. In this class I am also teaching the beginning steps of
gliding, waving, and popping. I've won a couple talent shows, 1 at Penn
Valley, also I taught a hip/hop routine to an AAU Cheerleading Competition
Team, who ended up taking first place. Hip/hop is something I can teach, but
the street style is more of my style. My class is made up of 30% hip/hop,
70% street style. Be ready to sweat, jam, glide, wave, and pop/lock. But
most of all I want you to become the dancer you want to be. I'm Ready to
teach you. Are you ready to learn?

Rana Alhena |
My given name is Barb, but I’ve had the pleasure of
selecting a professional name from an Arabic base. A laqab
(pronounced LAH-kahb), is a combination of words into a by name or epithet,
usually religious, relating to nature, a descriptive, or of some admirable
quality the person had (or would like to have). I tried to select my name
accordingly - Rana (to gaze, look) Alhena (alluding to a “brand” or mark).
Alhena is also the given Arabic name of a star located in the constellation
Gemini. Those who know me will understand how this might fit, but the name
also flows musically - Rana Alhena.
Although I had no formal dance instruction
as a child, the art and form of dance has consumed me since the beginning.
Whether it’s the beat on the radio, in the club, or in my head, I can never
stop dancing.
After ten years and two degrees, I had
achieved my career goal of becoming a Special Education Teacher. Despite my
satisfaction with this achievement, I suddenly found myself without a goal
to pursue. Sitting still has never been my style, so in 2001, I decided to
take some dance classes. I signed up for ballet and belly dancing. I
expected ballet to be difficult, and I was not disappointed; however, the
complexity of belly dancing surprised and enchanted me. I have been working
diligently ever since to master this art form.
Thanks to my teacher, Zada, I had my first
performance in 2003 and was instantly taken with being on stage. Although I
had to learn to relax, it is on stage that I have discovered the heart and
soul of Middle Eastern music.
This year I was presented with the
opportunity to combine my two loves, dancing and teaching. I have met some
wonderful people along the way and continue to learn about myself as I
become a better dancer, performer, and teacher.
In addition to studying with Zada Al
Gaziyeh since 2001, I have also attended workshops with Yousry Sharif,
Cassandra, Souhaila Salimpour, Princess Farhana, and Dahlia Carella. I have
performed in Cairo on the Kaw, the KC Renaissance Festival, and other events
around KC and Lawrence with Raghsidad since 2003. I’ve also performed at
both the Lawrence and KC locations of Aladdin Café as well as Olympic
Village Restaurant in Overland Park. In July of 2007, I traveled to New
York City to study with Yousry Sharif, Aida Nour, and Tito. I am looking
forward to incorporating these Egyptian techniques into my classes.
Every dancer has her own reasons for
choosing to study Middle Eastern Dance forms, but there is one thing we all
share..... finding the path that leads to personal growth and gaining the
strength and clarity to become a more beautiful woman!

ballet & gymnastics at the age of six. She developed a love for gymnastics
where she has performed in floor routines, the balance beam & parallel
bars. In 1996 she began running & entered her first road race which was the
Hospital Hill ½ marathon. With that under her built she decided to run her
first marathon in Logan, Utah & second in Lincoln, Nebraska. After
completing more road races over the years she switched to triathlons one of
which she placed 3rd in her age group. Through the years she
was a dancer in “The Boy Friend” & was one chosen out of many to be a part
of a workshop for the Kansas City Chiefett’s ½ time dancers and continued to
take some ballet, belly dance & aerobic classes.
She is married to Tom Alvarado who also grew up in the
Kansas City area. Tom grew up with a lot of exposure to dance with both his
mother & aunt performing for the Mexican Fiesta’s. His mother use to dance
with him at a very young age. His aunt went on to compete in Ball Room
Competitions winning many trophies. After being introduced to the Salsa
scene from a Cruise to the Caribbean in 2001 Tom knew he & Linda had to
learn how to salsa dance. When they returned home Tom, through the
internet, found Howard Carney & they started dance lessons at the Madrid
Theater early in 2002. Soon after learning Salsa Tom started learning
Casino Rueda. Later that year Linda learned Casino Rueda as well. Their
love for this exciting dance; which is a Cuban, circular style, with all
couples performing the same move simultaneously, & their desire to build
community inspired them to begin teaching Casino Rueda in 2005. They teach &
prepare students for performing as part of a group now known as Casino Rueda
KC. Tom & Linda performed with the Casino Rueda group in Atlanta in 2006
during the “Day of the Dead” celebration & their group has performed for
Fiesta Latina, Ft. Leavenworth, Penn Valley Community College, KC School of

called Advertising Arts Sign Co. Inc. that was establish in 1959 by Tom’s
father who retired in 1990. Tom is the Graphic Artist & Linda is the sales
manager & estimator.
